Carob
The carob is the commonest tree in Malta in Minecraft, as it is on the real islands: on field walls, among the fields, along the valleys and across the garrigue.
Appearance
A short, thick trunk splits low into three to five limbs that spread outwards, under one wide, dense, dark crown. The edge of the crown hangs down towards the ground like a skirt.
| Size | Trunk | Limbs | Crown width |
|---|---|---|---|
| Young | 2 blocks | 3 | about 5 blocks |
| Mature | 2-3 blocks | 4-5 | about 8-9 blocks |
| Old | 3 blocks, 2×2 at the foot, with bark knots | 4-5 | about 10-12 blocks |
The trunk is made of mangrove logs, with mangrove wood blocks as bark knots. Spruce stairs, slabs and fences form the root flare at the foot, and leaf litter covers the ground under the crown.
Generation
| Setting | Share of the trees there |
|---|---|
| Trees among fields, valleys, garrigue and slopes | 40 % |
| Field walls | 30 % |
| Other woodland | 30 % |
| Old woodland (Buskett, Wardija) | 20 % |
| Valley gardens | 15 % |
| Orchards and gardens | 10 % |
| Pinewoods | 8 % |
Carobs are young about 22 % of the time, mature 50 % and old 28 %, reflecting the large old carobs found in real Maltese countryside. An old carob with another trunk closer than 3.5 blocks grows as a mature tree instead. See Trees for how trees are placed.
In real life
The carob tree (is-siġra tal-ħarrub) is one of the most typical trees of the Maltese islands. It grows along field walls and in the maquis of valley sides and rocky slopes, and unharvested trees grow very large.
